Fakenham's sixteenth league game of the season saw them travel to Wisbech. In the reverse fixture at the Stringer Ground in October Wisbech were 22 - 10 winners so Fakenham were looking to overturn that result.
The weather stayed dry throughout the game to allow for some rugby to be played without many handling errors.
The home side starved Fakenham of possession in the first half, whilst also controlling the territory. As a result, Wisbech were able to score five unanswered tries, along with three conversions, predominantly off the back of the strong carries from their big pack. The half time score was 31 - 0.
Wisbech continued where they left off in the second half, scoring two more converted tries within the first seven minutes.
However, Fakenham then fought back. With the platform set by the forwards, they moved the ball to the backs where outside centre Aaron Tagg was able to make an outside break and dive over in the left hand corner. Fly half Lloyd Marshall slotted an impressive touchline conversion.
Within ten minutes they'd scored again. This time, makeshift scrum half Tom Bane-Young found prop Zak Roberts Harrell lurking on the wing and put him in space, allowing Harrell to charge over with impressive pace from inside the Wisbech 22. Marshall couldn't add the extras from the right hand touchline.
With ten minutes to go Fakenham got their third try. After Wisbech lost control of the ball in their own 22, Marshall was able to pounce on the error to nudge the ball through and dive on it first to score. He duly converted his own try from just to the left of the posts.
Though they continued to push, Fakenham could not get the final try that would see them leave with a bonus point. In fact, Wisbech scored two more unconverted tries of their own before the final whistle, leaving the score 55 - 19 at full time. Wisbech were deserved winners on the day
A disappointing result for Fakenham, but a great attitude shown and commitment across the board, despite having a number of players out of position. The fight in the second half was particularly pleasing, even when playing the majority of it with 14 players due to injuries.
As a result, the Barsham Brewery Man of the Match went to all 16 players that turned out for Fakenham, putting in a big push and fighting to end, falling just short of the four try bonus point.
Next week sees Fakenham travel to Bedford Athletic II. Fakenham won an entertaining encounter 46 - 34 at the Stringer Ground in November and will be hoping to replicate that result. All travelling support would be much appreciated.
